LETTER TO A WATCHTOWER-ITE

Works vs. Simple Faith

Bob Thompson

I’m sorry you’re so reluctant to accept a man’s word about where he is coming from.  I have not tried to deceive you in any way but have told you the truth.

It appears that you have assumed that because I have a fair idea of what the Watchtower Society teaches that I must be a disgruntled former member of your religious organization, or something akin to that.  But nothing could be further from the truth.

I have made it my business over the years to check up on different sects and religious organizations, yours included, as have other people I meet from time to time.  I check up on people in business, why not you folks.

You may recall that we have a mandate from the Word of God that says, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”  1 Thess. 5:21.  If you are fearful of people checking up on your religious beliefs, perhaps you need to check up on the organization that puts them out.

Anyway, thanks for loaning these video tapes to us.  Several of my friends have listened to them, and we have had to admire the bravery of those who refused to salute “Heil Hitler.” Not only the Watchtower Witnesses refused, but many Christians who lived in Germany refused also.

By the way, [he] said, “I’m not born again.”   He told the truth, but John 3:3, in your own New World translation says,

“In answer Jesus said to him: most truly I say to you, unless anyone is born again,
he can not see the kingdom of God.”

Please kindly read the attached page that I’ve put together, Lane, and see what God says about works pertaining to salvation.  It was originally prepared for a Roman Catholic who argued that works is essential to salvation.   It was taken from their very own St. Joseph edition of the Bible.

Your Bible says the same things but in slightly different words, but your Bible makes it just as clear as the St. Joseph edition that salvation is apart from works.  You think your works play an important part in getting you to heaven, but the Lord Jesus said in John 6:29, (your translation), “In answer, Jesus said to them: ‘This is the work of God, that you exercise faith in Him whom that One sent forth.’”  The only work you or your wife can do to please the Lord, Lane, (until you are born again) is to cease working and believe the record of God’s Son.  1 John 5:11-13.  Eph. 2:8-9.  Sincerely,

HOW CAN I,  A SINNER,  BE SAVED & KNOW THAT I HAVE ETERNAL LIFE?

1.         2 TIM. 1:9 — “Who hath saved us and called us with an holy calling, NOT ACCORDING TO OUR WORKS but according to His own mercy and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.”

  2.         “BUT TO HIM THAT WORKETH NOT, BUT BELIEVETH on Him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.”
