SOUL SLEEP

Bob Thompson

I’ve often had people ask me, ”Brother Bob, after the Lord takes us home to be with Him, are we conscious or are we asleep”?  The so-called “Christian Baptists” teach it, so does the so-called Jehovah’s Witnesses and Adventists.

The truth is, there is no such thing as soul sleep, though the so-called “Christian Baptists, J.W.’s and Adventists teach it.   Instead, after we die, we’ll be very  much alive, more alive  than we ever were before we left this vale of tears..  Because you have a Berean spirit (Acts 17:11) You’re probably already asking, “how can we know for sure that we are conscious or asleep after we die?

We need only to turn to the Word of God and it will supply the evidence.  Let’s first look at Luke 16:19-31.  Here we find Abraham and the rich man in conversation one with the other. At this time, Abraham had been dead for approx. 1540 years, yet here he is, talking to the rich man who was in hell.  And, of course, the rich man was talking back.  They had to be pretty conscious to carry on like this.

Now let’s look at Revelation 6:9-11.  Here we read about some saints who had been killed in the early part of the tribulation period, conversing with the Lord.  One of these believers was saying:  “How long, O Lord, holy and true, doest Thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on earth?”  Then verse 11 gives us God’s response.  Pretty conscious saints, were they not?.

Finally, I’d like to introduce you to Psa. 16:11.  Well, probably I shouldn’t use the word “introduce” because you’ve probably been acquainted with this verse for years, or at least heard it quoted many times.  In any event, the verse reads like this:  “In thy presence is fullness of joy…”  (joy and unconsciousness hardly go together, right?) “…at Thy right hand (the right hand speaks of a place of strength) there are pleasures forevermore.”
